HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has given his approval to the ‘Tasreef’ project, a 30-billion dirham initiative aimed at enhancing Dubai’s rainwater drainage capacity.

Described by the Dubai Media Office as the largest project of its kind in the region, Tasreef will encompass the entire emirate and address Dubai’s rainwater requirements for the next century.

The Tasreef project aims to increase the city’s rainwater drainage capacity by 700%, handling over 20 million m³ of water daily. This initiative will bolster Dubai’s readiness for climate challenges, ensuring the safety and security of residents and citizens across the UAE.

In a video posted on Sheikh Mohammed’s official social media channel X, the Ruler of Dubai emphasized the need for enhanced preparedness in light of the recent exceptional weather events in April.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Dubai’s commitment to improving infrastructure and urban accomplishments, prioritizing the safety and security of all residents.

The Tasreef project will commence promptly and is scheduled for full completion by 2033.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), April’s historic storms and torrential rain marked the most substantial precipitation in 75 years, exceeding any records since data collection began in 1949. It represented the highest amount of rainfall ever recorded within a 24-hour period, according to the NCM.
