Plans announced for Dubai Metro to have 140 stations by 2040

Dubai has unveiled ambitious plans to expand its metro network significantly by 2040. Currently operating with 64 stations across 84 square kilometers, the Dubai Metro will grow to encompass 140 stations and cover over 228 square kilometers by 2040, as announced by the Government of Dubai on June 30. By 2030, the metro is expected to have 96 stations spread over 140 square kilometers.

These developments are part of Dubai’s strategy to enhance the areas surrounding metro stations, aiming to reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita and stimulate economic growth through increased residential, commercial, office, and service developments.

Where will the new Dubai Metro stations be?

The exact locations of the new stations planned by the Government of Dubai have not been disclosed yet. However, there is a reasonable expectation of their operational areas.

Presently, the Dubai Metro operates on two lines: the Green Line serves stations in Bur Dubai and Deira in the historic district, while the Red Line connects the old city and airport to Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020 in the southwest.

Construction is currently in progress on the Dubai Metro blue line, spanning 30 kilometers in total, with 15.5 kilometers underground and 14.5 kilometers above ground.

The project includes 14 stations, featuring 3 interchange stations, and will connect seamlessly with the existing red and green lines.

The ongoing development and expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport aims to establish it as the world’s largest capacity airport, incorporating Dubai Metro stations within its infrastructure.

Previous plans have outlined the addition of three new metro lines across Dubai, although official updates have been scarce in recent years.

The proposed purple line was designed to traverse the emirate from north to south, with Al Maktoum International Airport designated as a key stop.

The gold and pink lines were intended to connect the west to the east of Dubai. However, it remains unconfirmed whether these specific lines will be included in the broader Dubai Metro expansion plans.
